She reveals how the automotive―the last word image of independence and chance―has at all times held specific significance for African People, permitting black households to evade the numerous risks introduced by racial division in society and to take pleasure in, in some measure, the liberty of the open street.  She recounts the creation of a parallel, unseen world of black motorists, who relied on journey guides, black-only companies, and casual communications networks to maintain them secure.
